How is the date of Ramzan decided?

The date of Ramzan is decided according to the Lunar calendar. Ramadan starts with the sighting of the crescent moon (hilal) and lasts for a period of one month.

When the hilal is visible again at the end of the month, it is the time to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr (break the fast).

The month of Ramadan will start from 9th July and continue till 7th of August 2013.

It is to be noted that in the Muslim calendar, a holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day, so observing Muslims will celebrate Ramadan on the sunset of 9th July.
So this year Eid-ul-Fitr 2013 will be celebrated on 7th of August.

Variation of date:

Although Ramadan is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year, since the Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar and the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar.

This difference means Ramadan moves in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days every year. The date of Ramadan may also vary from country to country depending on whether the moon has been sighted or not.
